Message from the Department Chair
In Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs theory, which explains the fundamental motivations of human nature, the need for security, which comes second immediately after physiological needs, forms the existential foundation of the individual and society. However, in the 21st century, the concept of security has evolved beyond the classical understanding limited to physical walls or guard posts, transforming into a multidisciplinary field that combines risk analysis, crisis management, technology use, and legal competence. In a globalizing world, the rise of asymmetric threats, increasing urbanization rates, and the growing complexity of social living spaces have made qualified human resources in security services a necessity. Anticipating this strategic need and the necessity for professionalization in the sector, Balıkesir University has launched the Private Security and Protection Program under the Property Protection and Security Department at Kepsut Vocational School with the aim of training competent individuals who will lead the sector.
Our program, which has meticulously completed its academic structure and infrastructure work, began its educational life by accepting its first students in the 2020-2021 academic year. The program's primary goal is to train security experts who are not only physically strong but also capable of anticipating events, believe in the rule of law, respect human rights, and possess strong communication skills. The Kepsut Vocational School Private Security and Protection Program has a dynamic curriculum that combines theoretical knowledge with field applications. Throughout their two-year education, our students: gain a thorough understanding of Basic Law, Constitutional Law, Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure Law, as well as Law No. 5188 on Private Security Services and related legislation. At the same time, they are equipped with psycho-social skills such as crowd psychology management, effective communication, stress management, anger control, and body language reading techniques.
During the training process, students gain operational proficiency in close defense techniques, the use of security systems and devices such as X-Ray and CCTV, protection from explosive materials, and first response to fires and natural disasters. They also graduate with expertise in vital subjects such as first aid knowledge, crowd management, VIP protection tactics, and the ability to perform risk analysis. Students who graduate from our program receive the title of “Private Security and Protection Professional.” Our graduates, who have high potential for success in the exams organized by the General Directorate of Security of the Ministry of Interior, have the opportunity to be employed in a wide range of areas such as security units of public institutions and organizations, airports, ports, transportation terminals, banks, financial centers, shopping malls, hotels, strategically important power plants, and large organizations. Balıkesir University Kepsut Vocational School continues to train disciplined, well-equipped, and leadership-minded personnel sought by the security sector with its educational mission since 2020, opening the doors to an academic career and a reputable profession for candidates who want to build a secure future.
